Flying Monkeys

It is Sunday night, and we are watching the Wizard of Oz.  It is a classic.  Steve and I have been discussing how spooky the flying monkeys were when we were little.  That was the worst part of the whole move.  The part that gave you nightmares and the part of the movie where you gave up hope of Dorothy ever getting back to Kansas.  I wonder how many kids are watching it tonight and having those same feelings that we had.  It amazes me how a move made so long ago can still scare the snot out of kids.  It is now at the part where Lion, Scarecrow and Tin Man are sneaking into the Wicked Witches castle.

We had a good day.  We slept in, and that really was nice.  After a brief morning of lounging around, we drove to the Halltown farm to put up Steve's portable blind.  Turkey season opens tomorrow morning.  If he is feeling up to it, he will venture out into the woods in the morning.  He has his alarm set for 4:45.  He is really excited about bagging a turkey.  I am excited too.  We set up his blind not to far from where he will park the truck.  It will not be a bad walk for him.  He will have to be out of the woods by 1 since that is the time season ends for the day.  I think he will be home before that.  It is wonderful for him to go outside and enjoy nature.  He really loves to hunt.  I hope he has a good day and gets a huge tom.  I hope it has a record beard.  That would be wonderful.

He has been feeling ok.  He is still pretty tired from his chemo.   Putting the martin house up wore him out too.  Today there were several pairs going in and out of the house.  There are not 15 like before, but we are very hopeful.  Samurai sure enjoys watching them too.  He will just watch them as they fly around the yard.  So far they do not dive bomb him like they do when we mow.  Speaking of mowing, Steve mowed the side yard this afternoon.  It sure looks nice.  After mowing, he rested.  He was tired.

I sewed.  I got my pink dress almost finished.  It is a new pattern that I have not tried before.  So far it is going smoothly.  I am hoping to have it finished later this week.  It has no zippers, buttons, darts, pleats, or anything difficult.  I have to sew the side seams, sleeves, and collar facing still and of course the hem.  It is a very casual and will be perfect for school and this summer.  Can't wait.

I Skyped with Kay this evening.  It was nice to see her.  She, Shawn, and Dot were studying at Brady. Shawn and Kay have tests tomorrow night.  I don't remember what class.  She is done working at Chilli's until next fall or later this summer.  She is taking off May and June for sure.  Kay is coming home for the weekend.  It is Easter and Grandma and Grandpa's anniversary party.  I am making the briskets.  The first time I have ever been in charge of the meat.  Usually I do the salad, corn, or relish tray.  This is a big step-up for me.  I hope I don't disappoint.  We are also having the family picture made.  Everyone is wearing white shirts and blue jean.  Elizabeth is still in TX and should be home later this week.  She has a doctor appointment, and she is in a wedding this weekend.

Tomorrow is school, again.  We only go M-Th.  this week.  We are off for Good Friday.  We do have school on Monday.  It is a make-up day.  This week we are working on our DARE essays.  It is a requirement for the kids to graduate DARE and an assignment for my class.  They are usually good essays to grade and read.  They are a different type of writing than we normally do in my class.  We are also writing scenery recipes.  They research cooking words from cook books on Friday.  They are going to write recipes for pictures....(a little example)
55 tons fine grind sand
1000 gallons water
salt
sunshine
Gradually heat water over stove.  Slowly add salt.  Stir until dissolved.  Gently sprinkle sand over the beach.  Add warm salt water.  Garnish with sunshine.

Get it?  A beach scene.  Of course the kids do a much better job than I could ever do.  They use such good cooking verbs and ingredients.  They are so imaginative.  I love when we get to do the "fun" things like this.  No more MAP stuff until next Aug.  This is the best time of year when we can do the things that are not tested, cut still are learning activities.  This is what school and teaching should be like all the time.!!!!   If only I ruled the world....
